Abstract
In order to assess the growth, nutritional status of primary, middle and high school
students in the city of Seoul, physiques of 4,201 persons(male; 2,196, female; 2,005) were
measured from March 1 to July 30 in 1996 and various physical and nutritional indices,
maximum growth age and body fat were calculated.

The results are as follows;
1. Growth
The growth of height showed straight linear increasement among male in the ages
7-16 and among female 7-14, and after that showed slower growth. The age of cross
over between two sexes was between 11.0 to 12.5 years of age. The maximum velocity
growth was between 10 and 11 years of age(7.28cm) in male and between 10 and 11
years of age(9.77cm) in female.

In terms of body weight, it also showed straight linear increasement among male in
the ages 7-16 and among female 7-14, and after that showed slower growth. The
heighest increase of weight was between 11 and 12 years of age(8.19kg) in male and
between 11 and 12 years of age(7.64kg) in female. In terms of chest girth, it showed two growth spurts among male in the age of 7-13 and 13-17, and among female in the age of 7-14 and 14-17. The age of cross over between two sexes was 12 and 15.5 years of age.
In terms of sitting height, it also showed two growth spurts in the age of 7-14 and
14-17 of both sexes and the age of cross over between two sexes was between 10.5 to
14.5 years of age. The maximum growth was between 14 and 15 years of age(3.81cm)
in male and between 11 and 12 years of age(5.98cm) in female.

2. Physical and nutritional indices
Relative body weight to height increased between 7 to 17 years of age in both sexes
and female exceeds male from then on. In relative chest girth to height, narrow chest shape was shown in 7-15 age group for male and in 7-12 age group for female and after that age group, normal chest shape was shown. Intermingling occured in 12.5 and over age group and female exceeds male from then on.

In the cases of relative sitting height to height, it is the same as that of relative body
weights. It reached the highest point at 7 years of age group for both sexes and after
that, it slowly decreased and that of female was greater than that of male in 9.5 years
and over. It showed 52-54 in male and 53-54 in female through the whole age group.
R hrer index was more fitter in female than in male and was less fitter in adolescence rather than later on complete growth.

Kaup indices of both sexes increased with age. The index was less than 2.0 for male
in 7-14 age group and for female in 7-13 age group and with this, it appeared that
development of horizontal axis to longitudinal axis was poor. The index was more than
2.0 after 14 age group in male and 13 age group in female and developmental state had
been good. Vervaeck index was 69¡86 for male and 67¡86 for female, and increased with age in both sexes. Pelidisi index was 92-96 for both sexes and increased with age.

3. Maximum growth age MGA of physical growth
MGA for height was 10.59 in male and 10.34 in female.
MGA for weight was 10.41 for male and 10.30 in female.
MGA for chest girth was 14.74 for male and 11.60 in female.
MGA for sitting height was 11.69 for male and 11.39 in female.
Maximum growth ages of physiques appeared in order of body height>body weight>
sitting height>chest-girth.

4. The rate body fat by anthropometric method
The rate of body fat was 8-17 in male and 27-37 in female.
